Jane Withers
Biography
Jane Withers was an American actress who became a major child star in 1930s Hollywood. Born in Atlanta, she performed on radio as a young child before moving to Los Angeles in 1932. After years as an extra, she gained notice as the spoiled Joy Smythe opposite Shirley Temple in Bright Eyes (1934). Her pictures ranked in the top ten at the box office in 1937 and 1938. She made 38 films before retiring at 21 in 1947. Withers later returned as a character actor, appearing in Giant (1956) and television episodes. In the 1960s and early 1970s she played Josephine the Plumber in Comet cleanser commercials. She also supplied voices for Disney animation, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) and its 2002 sequel. In 1960 she received a star on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame.

First role
Withers made her stage debut in late 1944 in Glad To See You, a musical comedy directed by Busby Berkeley. The production was intended for Broadway but closed after tryouts in Philadelphia and Boston that lasted seven weeks.
A first
At the 1st Youth in Film Awards ceremony in 1979, the Young Artist Former Child Star Lifetime Achievement Award went to Withers, who was its first recipient.
