Plot summary
A disfigured Paul, still infected, leaves the creek and reaches a highway, where a school bus strikes him. Deputy Winston Olsen tells the bus driver that a moose was hit, and Paul's blood contaminates a local bottled water company whose bottles are bound for the high school. Senior John is deciding between prom with Cassie, the girl he has long liked, and a night at home with his friends. Alex, his friend, wants no part of prom until he meets Liz, who says she may meet him there. John asks Cassie and she refuses. In the school, the lunch lady hands out the water, and students who drink it begin to sicken.
