Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Burnt Money (2000)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • SPOILERIn the real 1965 Montevideo siege, both El Nene and Dorda, the model for Angel, died; a police officer interviewed for a documentary said the two bodies were found holding hands but were separated before the official police photographs were taken. Unlike the film, the real Cuervo, Mereles, was only mortally wounded and did not die during the siege.
  • The dates shown at the film's end, 28 September to 4 November 1965, are not quite accurate: the final attack on the fugitives' Montevideo hiding place came on Saturday 6 November 1965. Three days earlier they had stolen a car and provoked a shootout with Uruguayan police beside Montevideo's TV canal 8, later the only channel to carry live coverage of the siege.
  • The real El Nene, whose name was Brignone, was the educated son of a judge and said in an interview that he never knew what would happen with the money; he called Dorda, renamed Angel in the film, the most good-natured of the robbers, while Malito, the film's Fontana, evoked fear.
  • SPOILERThe three robbers were buried anonymously in the Northern Cemetery of Montevideo at 8am on Wednesday, 10 November 1965. Only El Nene's body was claimed by his family and taken back to Argentina.
  • In February 1966, Malito, the real-life Fontana of the film, was seen in Flores, a Buenos Aires neighborhood, and shot dead by police there.
