Plot summary
Alex is fifteen, intersex, and has been raised as a girl. Her family left Argentina for a small town by the sea in Uruguay, hoping to escape the prejudice and the rigid ideas about gender they had met with. Néstor Kraken, Alex's father, makes his living from the sea and looks after wounded creatures that local fishermen bring him. Alex has quietly stopped taking the medication that holds back masculine physical traits. Her mother, Suli, has invited friends from Argentina to stay: Erika, her closest friend years ago, Erika's husband Ramiro, a surgeon, and their son Álvaro, a teenager. Suli hopes Alex will keep living as a girl and agree to an operation Ramiro could perform. Alex and Álvaro grow interested in each other.
