Biography

Albert Sharpe was an Irish stage and film actor born in Belfast in 1885. He became closely identified with two roles: Darby O'Gill in the Disney film Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959), which also featured Sean Connery, and Finian McLonergan in the first Broadway production of Finian's Rainbow. When Portrait of Jennie (1948) was shooting in New York, Sharpe was appearing in Finian's Rainbow alongside David Wayne and Maude Simmons; producer David O. Selznick brought all three into the film. He played Andrew, the father of Fiona, in the MGM musical Brigadoon (1954) and worked with Peter O'Toole in The Day They Robbed the Bank of England (1960). Sharpe was a member of the Abbey Players and died in Belfast in 1970.
