Plot summary
Doc Savage comes back to New York City from the Fortress of Solitude, his Arctic hideaway, and learns that his father died in mysterious circumstances in the interior of Hidalgo, a Central American republic. A gunman ambushes him while he studies his father's papers, and the body he examines carries odd markings: red fingertips and a tattoo of the Mayan god Kukulkan. Intruders then wreck those papers. Doc promises to solve the murder and flies to Hidalgo with his companions. There an official of the land office, Don Rubio Gorro, tells him that records of a land grant to his father are gone, and Gorro's assistant Mona Flores, who has seen the original documents, offers to guide them to the claim. The international criminal Captain Seas keeps trying to kill Doc and his men.

- George Pal says he and his team wrote an original Doc Savage screenplay, then realized they did not know who Doc Savage was, where he came from or why he was rich, so they went back and wrote a screenplay based on the first novel, The Man of Bronze.
- The production team of Mark Goodson and Bill Todman, better known for game shows, planned a Doc Savage film based on the July 1934 pulp novel The Thousand-Headed Man with Chuck Connors as Doc for a 1966 release, but could not secure the film rights from Lester Dent's estate.
- George Pal had originally approached Steve Reeves to play Doc Savage, but a Hollywood writers strike put the film on hold just as shooting was about to begin, and Reeves and the original director were replaced.
