Plot summary
Axel Foley is a plainclothes detective in Detroit. His superior, Inspector Todd, warns that his reckless conduct could cost him his job. At his apartment Axel finds his childhood friend Mikey Tandino, who now works in California as a security guard. Mikey shows German bearer bonds and will not say where they came from. Men break in, knock Axel out, and kill Mikey. Barred from the case, Axel takes a vacation and travels to Beverly Hills, where Jenny Summers, who works in an art gallery, tells him about her boss, Victor Maitland.

- Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said the role of Axel Foley was first offered to Mickey Rourke, who signed a $400,000 holding contract, then left the project for another film when revisions and other preparations took longer than expected.
- Sylvester Stallone was originally considered for Foley and gave the script a dramatic rewrite, removing the humor and turning it into a standard action film, renaming the lead Axel Cobretti and making Michael Tandino his brother; in one earlier draft Billy Rosewood was called Siddons and was killed off half-way through.
- Stallone said his script for Beverly Hills Cop would have looked like the Normandy beach landing that opens Saving Private Ryan, and that the finale was him in a stolen Lamborghini playing chicken with an oncoming freight train driven by the bad guy.
- Stallone dropped out two weeks before filming was to start, ostensibly to concentrate on Rhinestone, his next picture, and later used the bulk of his ideas as the basis for his 1986 film Cobra.
- Don Simpson later told friends a story, impossible to corroborate, about how he got Stallone off the project: knowing a Swiss doctor who was experimenting with injections of a sheep hormone, he had Stallone's name put at the top of the appointment list, and once Stallone flew to Switzerland, Simpson promptly carried on with Beverly Hills Cop without him.
- Besides Stallone and Rourke, Richard Pryor, Al Pacino and James Caan were considered for the role of Axel Foley, and Harrison Ford was offered the part outright but turned it down.
- For nearly two decades Beverly Hills Cop held the record for the highest domestic gross by an R-rated film, until The Matrix Reloaded took it in 2003.
