Plot summary
PJ and Josie are best friends and unpopular seniors at Rockbridge Falls High, a football-obsessed school. Both are lesbians and both are virgins. At the back-to-school fair they flirt with two popular cheerleaders, Brittany and Isabel, and get nowhere. Isabel is dating Jeff, the school's star quarterback. When Isabel and Jeff argue, PJ and Josie invite her into their car to get away, and when Jeff refuses to move they bump into him, and he fakes an injury in front of the football team. Facing expulsion, Josie says they were practicing for a feminist self-defense club.

- Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott were rejected by multiple studios, often barred from pitching Bottoms at all, and had companies refuse to feature their products because of its supposedly "offensive" lesbian premise. With no New Orleans high school willing to lend its campus, Seligman shot mostly in an abandoned elementary school and a college gymnasium.
- Early drafts of Bottoms sent PJ and Josie to a "militaristic boot camp" for "horny girls", where Punkie Johnson would have been introduced as the camp's head. The scenes were removed after they got a poor reception at test screenings.
- Marshawn Lynch accepted his part in Bottoms as "an opportunity to correct [his] wrongs": his sister had come out as a lesbian when he was sixteen and he had not initially handled it well, and he spoke with her about the role before taking it.
- Emma Seligman cast Marshawn Lynch at the suggestion of co-star Ayo Edebiri, who pointed her to his appearance on the Netflix series Murderville, the majority of which he had improvised.
- Opening in ten theaters, Bottoms averaged $46,105 per screen, the highest per-screen average on ten or more screens since Everything Everywhere All at Once in April 2022.
