Plot summary
Megyn Kelly co-moderates a 2016 Republican debate and asks Donald Trump about his remarks on women, and he responds with insults. Death threats and paparazzi attention follow, and the network presses her. Gretchen Carlson is dropped from Fox & Friends, the popular morning show she co-anchored, and moved to a smaller program, where sexist comments reach her on the air and off it, including from Roger Ailes. She approaches two lawyers, Nancy Smith and Neil Mullin, who tell her the terms of her contract bar her from suing the network, though she can bring a case against Ailes himself. Kayla Pospisil begins work on The O'Reilly Factor and meets a fellow staffer, Jess Carr; the two start a relationship.

- Megyn Kelly said Bombshell took liberties with her story, denied she told Murdoch in advance the question she would ask Donald Trump at the debate, and said Roger Ailes was very angry at her for asking it and told her, "No more female empowerment stuff!"
- In October 2018, Annapurna Pictures dropped out of producing Bombshell, reportedly over concerns about its growing budget, and the next week Lionsgate began negotiating to join after Focus Features and Amblin Entertainment both passed on the project.
