Plot summary
Jackie Kirk arrives at a college in Bloomington, Indiana, as a former child actress hoping to leave her old life behind and fit in with students who remember her work. At an on-campus mixer she meets Catherine Stark, one of her teachers, and the two start an affair they keep hidden. The secrecy pulls Jackie away from her friends, and Sandy, a classmate competing with her for a scholarship, resents what she sees as preferential treatment. When Jackie is offered the chance to act again, Catherine grows uneasy about a relationship that would always have to stay out of sight, and the two disagree about whether it is worth the risk.
