Plot summary
A new school year begins at a small suburban high school, and Abigail Grey is back after months in a psych ward. She takes on the traits of the characters she reads, and her classmates mock her, calling her Sybil. Melissa Bowman and her friend Sophie pick on her, while Ellie Redgrave is the one classmate who shows her kindness. The substitute drama teacher, Jeremy Woods, assigns Arthur Miller's The Crucible for a class showcase, and Abigail and Melissa both want the lead and his attention; he picks Abigail for the part of Abigail Williams. Jennifer, Jeremy's girlfriend, pushes him to look for another job, and he says he likes teaching. Melissa tells Sophie that Eric, whom Sophie likes, has volunteered to read John Proctor opposite Abigail, as if Abigail likes him too.
