Plot summary
Black Beauty, a wild mustang, narrates her own life. She is born free in the Onaqui Mountains of Utah, where her mother tells her that horses rest among the stars after they die. Cowboys round up the herd, and the young horse is left without her mother. A trainer, John Manly, buys her and brings her to Birtwick, a sanctuary where she meets two other horses, Ginger and Merrylegs. She will not cooperate with anyone. Then John takes in his niece, Jo Green, whose parents have died, and Jo is drawn to the stubborn mustang. The horse recognizes a grief like her own. Jo tames her and gives her the name Black Beauty, and John has her tend to the horse in the stables.

- In the film Black Beauty, four horses play the title role: Spirit, Jenny, Awards and Rosie. A horse also named Black Beauty plays her as a foal, and a horse named Beauty plays her mother, Duchess.
- Filming began in South Africa in October 2019, with key scenes shot at locations including Springfontein Estate, which director Ashley Avis later said was used for selected aerial and stunt shots.
