Plot summary
Detective Halloran and his partner Hunt chase Edgar Munsen, who sets off a remote trigger and is shot. Five people wake in a barn, buckets over their heads and chains at their necks; a recording of John Kramer tells them that only spilled blood will free them as buzz saws draw closer. Pathologists Logan Nelson and Eleanor Bonneville examine a body hung from a bridge, with a jigsaw-shaped piece of flesh missing from its neck and a tape inside announcing that four players remain. The barn group faces a second test: one of them carries poison, and three needles hold an antidote, saline and acid. Eleanor shows Logan a studio filled with recreations of Jigsaw's traps.

- The original pitch from Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger was set on an oil derrick in the middle of the ocean, so that escaping the room left the players stranded at sea with no way out. Lionsgate was not convinced, and the pair pitched repeatedly before settling on a time-shift storyline.
- Jigsaw is the only film in the Saw franchise never rated NC-17 by the Motion Picture Association of America, having obtained an R rating without cuts.
