Ann Gillis
Biography
Ann Gillis was an American actress who spent much of her career playing children on screen. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, she began performing in the early 1930s at the age of seven. After minor parts she landed her first substantial role in King of Hockey (1936), and Warner Brothers Pictures promoted her as a possible second Shirley Temple even though she was usually given the parts of spoiled children. Her larger credits included the role of Becky Thatcher in David O. Selznick's production The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), the title part in Little Orphan Annie (1938), and the speaking voice of the young adult Faline in the Disney animation Bambi (1942). She left Hollywood films in 1947 and afterwards did occasional television in Britain, among it two episodes of The Saint between 1964 and 1965, and a bit part in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) as the mother of Dr. Poole. Gillis died in 2018.
