Plot summary

In the 1920s, Bruce Wayne has spent twenty years abroad after his parents were murdered, looking for what drives criminals. He comes home to Gotham City with Kai Li Cain, Dick Grayson, Sanjay "Jay" Tawde, the protégés he has taken on, his butler Alfred Pennyworth, and the undead crewman Grendon, who was found freeing an otherworldly creature trapped in ice and carries one of its parasites. At Wayne Manor the group finds the body of the scientist Kirk Langstrom in the library, and Bruce hears a demon speak with Langstrom's voice. Jason Blood, who hosts the demon Etrigan, warns Bruce about a rite that calls for his death and for Gotham's ruin. In a bat-themed suit of his own making, Bruce looks into Langstrom's research, which leads him to the Cult of Ghul and the Testament of Ghul.
