Plot summary
Merliah Summers is a young surfer in Malibu, raised by her grandfather Break. During a competition her hair shows pink streaks, she wipes out, and underwater she finds she can breathe; the dolphin Zuma tells her she is half mermaid. Her mother is Calissa, the former queen of the ocean kingdom of Oceana, who went missing years ago, and Break explains that Calissa left her with him as a baby since she was born with legs rather than a tail. Calissa's sister Eris took the throne when Calissa vanished and now rules Oceana, where the ocean is weakening because Eris cannot spin Merillia. Merliah agrees to travel to Oceana hoping Calissa can make her human again, and the mermaids Kayla and Xylie disguise her legs with a false tail.
