Plot summary
Tess arrives in Detroit the night before a job interview and finds the house she has booked on Airbnb double-booked: Keith, a man she does not know, is already staying there. She decides to stay, and he sleeps on the couch. In the night she wakes to find her bedroom door open, and he says he did not open it. Her interviewer warns her that the neighborhood is dangerous, and as she returns a stranger runs toward her urging her to leave. She hurries inside and accidentally locks herself in the basement, where she comes upon a hidden room holding a camera, a bucket, a stained mattress and a bloody handprint.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Zac Efron was the first choice to play AJ, a character Zach Cregger imagined as a "beefcake kind of himbo". After Efron turned the role down, Cregger went a different direction and cast Justin Long for his warm, disarming presence.
- In April 2021, while Barbarian was in production, the film's main financier, Logical Pictures founder Eric Tavitian, died of cancer. Roy Lee then secured backing from New Regency, which increased the budget to $4.5 million and made 20th Century Studios the distributor.
- Zach Cregger took the idea for Barbarian from The Gift of Fear, a non-fiction book advising women to trust their intuition about men. He began by writing a single thirty-page scene about a woman arriving at a double-booked Airbnb late at night.
