Plot summary
High school friends April and Nick dated for two years. In their senior year they learned they had applied to different colleges and could not manage a long distance relationship, so they broke up. The summer before college, April learns that Nick is seeing Clara. At a party with her friends Molly and Sally, April texts Ben, a mutual friend, to ask about Clara, and spends much of the night hiding in bedrooms to avoid her. Clara finds her, introduces herself and they talk, and April is surprised by how much they have in common. Clara leaves her number in April's phone. The two keep spending time together, drawn by similar tastes, and agree on a rule: never discuss Nick and never tell him about the friendship.
