Plot summary
Culture is a television station built around African-American music artists, and in 1989 Anna works there as an assistant who wants to move up. When the station's owner, Grant Madison, removes the programming head Edna and installs the former supermodel Zora in her place, Anna pitches a live music video countdown show to broaden the station's reach. Zora takes her on as an assistant but wants her Afro-textured hair replaced by a weave, and gives her the address of Virgie's, an upscale salon. Appointments there run months out, so Anna pleads with Virgie herself, who fits her in at the end of the day. The process hurts, Anna faints, and Virgie hands her a pink bottle of product with a warning never to let the weave get wet.
