Plot summary
In 1975, the members of a cult called Unity Fields burn to death together at the command of their leader, Franklin Harris. The child Cynthia Weston refuses to die with them and survives, but remains in a coma. She wakes thirteen years later in a psychiatric hospital, where Dr. Alex Karmen runs an experimental therapy group for borderline personality disorder. Cynthia is troubled by flashbacks of the fire and by visions of a burnt Harris, who urges her to end her life. Around her, patients begin to die, and Cynthia cannot tell whether the deaths are suicides or something else.

- Fleming wanted X's "Burning House of Love" as the end title song of Bad Dreams, but 20th Century Fox executive Ralph Sall pushed then-unknown Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine" instead. Sall won; Fleming said it was licensed for about five cents and became a hit only weeks later.
- Guns N' Roses were going to make a video using clips from the film, but Axl Rose's girlfriend Erin Everly said the song was about her and did not want clips from a horror movie in it, so she got her way and the video was dropped.
