Plot summary
On June 18, 1990, Async researcher Naren Warne is separated from his group inside the Backrooms, a labyrinth of dull yellow rooms, long corridors and fluorescent lights. Some time afterward, Clark, an architect whose furniture store in San Jose, California, is failing, tries to cope with his drinking and a marriage coming apart. He sees a therapist, Mary Kline, who is still working through the demolition of her childhood home and the institutionalization of her agoraphobic mother. To shoot a television commercial in which he appears as Cap'n Clark, the store's pirate mascot, Clark enlists Kat, who works for him, and Bobby, her boyfriend. He has moved into the store, notices the lights flickering at night, and, while checking the breaker box, finds a glowing slit in the wall. He falls through into the Backrooms.

- Kane Parsons became the youngest filmmaker at the time to reach number one at the box office, taking the record from Josh Trank, who had set it with Chronicle in 2012.
- Cristin Milioti was in negotiations to star in Backrooms in May 2025, but her deal fell through and Renate Reinsve was cast in her place that June.
- More than 30,000 sqft of Backrooms sets were built across four sound stages, using 37,000 sqft of wallpaper and 29,000 sqft of carpet, much of it sourced locally in Canada to avoid tariffs.
- Director Kane Parsons created the Backrooms' liminal space environments in the 3D software Blender, and production designer Danny Vermette then adapted those digital designs for physical construction.
