Plot summary
Tori and Kyle Breyer want a child and cannot have one. A spaceship crashes in the woods near their Kansas farm, and they find a baby inside and raise him as their son, Brandon, telling him only that he came from an agency. Brandon is bright, curious and helpful around the farm, and he has never bled. As he nears twelve, he begins speaking in a language no one knows and slipping away to the barn, where the ship is kept locked in storage. Mowing the lawn, he learns his own strength is indestructible. At his birthday dinner at the local diner, his uncle Noah gives him a rifle and Kyle refuses to let him keep it; Brandon shouts at Kyle until the family leaves.
