Plot summary
Paul keeps his wife Sarah and their teenage son Travis sealed inside a house deep in the woods, away from a contagious disease that has spread across the planet. Sarah's father Bud falls ill, so the family puts him to death and burns the body. That night, an intruder breaks in. Paul knocks the man out and ties him to a tree outside with a sack over his head, leaving him there to see whether the disease is on him. The stranger, Will, says he came looking for drinking water for his wife and small son, and offers goats and chickens in exchange. Sarah argues the house would be easier to defend with more people, so Paul agrees to drive Will back to collect his family.

- Writer-director Trey Edward Shults began the script after the death of his father as a way of dealing with the pain, and cites Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1562 painting The Triumph of Death as inspiration; it features prominently in the movie and its first trailer.
- Although the film is post-apocalyptic, Shults did not look to other such films for inspiration, citing Night of the Living Dead and The Shining; like the Overlook Hotel, the house's layout is deliberately vague, which Shults described as a labyrinth and a metaphor for "the mesh of Travis' head".
