Plot summary
Johnny Eager reports to A. J. Verne, his parole officer, and lets him believe he drives a taxi. In fact Johnny heads a gambling syndicate, and his dog-racing track stays shut under an injunction obtained by District Attorney John Benson Farrell, the prosecutor who once sent him to prison. Verne introduces him to Lisbeth Bard, a sociology student and socialite. The two are drawn to each other. When Johnny finds out that Liz is Farrell's stepdaughter, he decides to use her against her stepfather. At his side is his right-hand man, Jeff Hartnett.
