Plot summary
Jenn leaves the city with her boyfriend Alex for a weekend of camping in an Ontario nature reserve, her first trip into the woods. Alex intends to walk a favorite trail that a ranger has told him is closed for the season, and he turns down a map. Paddling across a lake, he drops the canoe on his foot and insists he is not hurt. An Irish tour guide named Brad passes their camp, and Jenn asks him to stay for dinner; he flirts with her and belittles Alex until he goes. Jenn is left uncomfortable, and Alex is annoyed with her. The next morning, Alex leads her off the trail toward a lake he remembers.

- Backcountry is loosely based on a real 2005 attack by a hungry man-eating black bear on Mark Jordan and Jacqueline Perry in the back country of Missinaibi Lake Provincial Park, north of Chapleau, Ontario. Jordan later received the Star of Courage award from Governor General Michaëlle Jean for those events.
