Plot summary
Harlan, a humanoid artificial intelligence, turns on humanity in 2043 and sparks a machine uprising, and a newly formed International Coalition of Nations drives Harlan away from Earth. Nearly three decades pass before analyst Atlas Shepherd learns where Harlan went: a planet in the Andromeda Galaxy, a location that comes from questioning one of Harlan's captured agents. Atlas, who does not trust artificial intelligence, demands a place on the expedition sent to find and capture Harlan, a mission that depends on AI-assisted mecha called ARCs. Harlan's drones strike the orbiting ship just before the ARC-equipped Rangers descend, and Atlas falls to the planet inside an ARC as the ship crash-lands. The ARC's onboard AI introduces itself as Smith.
