Plot summary
In 1980 in Queens, New York, Paul Graff fills his class time with drawings, and his parents, Esther and Irving, are not convinced he can make a living as an artist. His maternal grandfather, Aaron Rabinowitz, encourages the ambition and tells Paul how Aaron's mother fled antisemitic persecution in Ukraine, reaching London before emigrating to the United States. On his first day in sixth grade Paul befriends Johnny Davis, a rebellious African-American classmate who was held back a year and faces harsher discipline from their teacher when the two joke around in class. Caught smoking a joint in the school restrooms, unaware it is an illegal drug, Paul is beaten at home with Esther's consent, and his parents move him to the private Forest Manor Prep, where his older brother Ted studies.
