Plot summary
A teenager in El Paso in 1987, Aristotle Mendoza cannot get his parents to explain why his brother Bernardo is in prison. At a public pool he meets Dante Quintana, another Mexican-American teenager, who teaches him to swim, and the two become friends. Dante's well-off parents invite him on a camping trip, where the boys look up at a vast night sky.

- The film was offered a prominent slot at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, but director Aitch Alberto turned it down and held out for the autumn festivals to allow more time for "fine-tuning".
- Aitch Alberto first read Benjamin Alire Sáenz's novel in 2014 and wrote a spec script, then flew to Texas in 2016 to pitch her idea to Sáenz in person and discuss the rights to adapt his novel.
- Four years before the film came out, Xolo Maridueña and Reese Gonzales performed a live reading of Aitch Alberto's screenplay at the 2018 Outfest, and Gonzales went on to reprise his role in the film.
