Plot summary
Gail Osborne, sixteen, takes photographs and attends high school in a small town. She dates Steve Pastorinis against her mother Anne's wishes, and before that she dated classmate E.K. Miller, who ended things when she would not sleep with him. The family moved from San Francisco after a burglary, because her father Neil thought the city unsafe. Then an anonymous letter arrives saying someone is watching her, and a strange man begins calling, laughing. Her best friend Allison Bremer thinks a student is playing a joke. Another note follows, and the principal tells her the sender could be a current or former boyfriend, or someone she knows.
