Plot summary
Gerri Hepple works as a counselor and her husband Tom is a geologist. They have been married for many years and are happy together. Around them, friends and family are not: Mary, who works with Gerri at the health center, is a middle-aged divorcee who says she is happy but appears to drink too much. Their son Joe is thirty, single, and advises people on housing. Tom's old friend Ken, who eats, smokes and drinks compulsively, visits in the summer. Mary arrives late to a barbecue for Ken, having lost her way in her new car, and flirts with Joe, who stays friendly but does not respond.
