Plot summary
Edwin is a quiet, sensitive boy in junior high, and Flake is his only friend. Both are bullied, and the adults around them, teachers and parents alike, treat the boys as the ones at fault. Edwin's father dismisses his remarks as teenage angst; a meeting called by the vice principal is what finally draws his parents' concern. At Flake's house, Flake shows Edwin his father's gun collection and suggests shooting up their school, and Edwin agrees out of loyalty to the friend he has known since childhood. An art teacher recognizes his artistic ability and encourages him to join a project for a competition. Two classmates ask him onto their team, which lifts his confidence, while Flake keeps pushing the plan.
