Plot summary

Deb Callahan, 33, is raising her teenage daughter Bridget and Bridget's baby, Jesse, in a rural part of Pennsylvania. Bridget's father is not around. Deb's older sister Katherine lives straight across the street with her family. One evening Deb keeps Jesse while Bridget goes out with Tyler, the baby's father. The next morning Bridget has not come home. Deb calls people she knows and asks Tyler what happened. He says the two of them quarreled and that Bridget set off for her friend Jenna's place. Jenna says Bridget had left late that evening and intended to walk home. Detective Sergeant Morris opens an investigation. Deb tells him Tyler is responsible, saying she thinks he abused Bridget. Feeling helpless, Deb seeks comfort in Brett, a married man she has been seeing.
