Plot summary
The Cathedral High Phantoms are led by team captain Gabby Espinoza; her firefighter father died recently in a fire, and her mother died when Gabby was little. The Madonnas are the Phantoms' volleyball rivals, and that same fire destroyed the Madonnas' school. Three of the Madonnas' players, Lauren McDonald, Kaitlin and Becca Watley, transfer to Cathedral High and join the volleyball team. Gabby's teammates Lettie and Rada clash with the newcomers, and the squad loses a match because the players cannot work together. Coach Harlan tells them they must play as one team, and the girls gradually grow closer as they win games.
