Plot summary
Rita Carmichael and her daughter Ruthie keep moving whenever Rita's relationships turn bad. In 2008, during the financial crisis, they are on their way to Boston when their car breaks down and takes most of their money with it. At Tiny's, a small-town diner in the Midwest, they order food intending to leave without paying, but the car acts up again. Rita goes back inside and tells them how desperate she and Ruthie are. Marty hires the two of them, and they move out of the car into a room behind the diner. Ruthie starts to think they have found a home, and she becomes friends with Peter Pam, another waitperson who is on her own.
