Plot summary

Belle is twelve and lives with her father. Her grandfather, who keeps Banyon Farms, visits and lets her choose a name for a puppy, and she calls it Atticus. Not long afterward her mother is killed in a car accident, and the girl decides her father is at fault. He is grieving and bringing her up on his own. She lets the dogs out of the kennels where he works, and for that she is sent to the farm while he takes a room at an inn run by Poovey. The grandfather has changed since his daughter died and has trouble being with Belle, who reminds him of her mother. Back home, healthy pets are sickening and dying, and the father's girlfriend, a veterinarian, is searching for what is doing it.
