Plot summary
David Marks is a third-generation member of a New York real estate family whose tenements and commercial properties rank it among the city's five largest landowners. His widowed father, Sanford, runs the business, and David has never wanted any part of it. In January 1971 he meets Katie McCarthy, a working-class tenant in a building the family owns. Sanford disapproves of her background, yet the two marry and settle in Vermont, where they run a health food store while Sanford pays their bills. Sanford then persuades David to bring Katie back to New York and accept a job in the family business, work she would object to if she knew what it involved. As David sinks into that work, his mood and behavior change, and Katie no longer recognizes the man she married.
