Plot summary

Nina Geld performs stand-up in New York and does well onstage, but offstage her life is a shambles. Her mother is the one steady bond she has, and her dealings with men have been sporadic, apart from Joe, a violent policeman who is married and will not let her go. Her agent offers her a place in the cast of a hit television show that shoots in Los Angeles, so she moves west, aware of the risk. Lake, a wealthy friend of the agent, gives her a room in a hillside villa. After her first California performance, she meets Rafe, an older man whose interest in her goes beyond attraction, and for the first time a relationship looks possible.
