Plot summary
An experimental deep-sea United States Naval facility, DeepStar Six is in the final week of its tour with eleven military and civilian crew aboard. John Van Gelder heads the project, which tests underwater colonization methods while installing a new nuclear missile storage platform, and his deadline is close. Geologist Burciaga then finds a massive cavern system beneath the site, and Van Gelder orders depth charges to collapse it, against Dr. Scarpelli's wish to study the primordial ecosystem inside. The blast collapses part of the seabed and opens a deep fissure. The crew's explorations disturb a creature that threatens the base.
