Trailer

Plot summary

Kuzco is the conceited young emperor of an Incan empire, and the day before his eighteenth birthday he announces a summer home to be built on the site of a village, over the objections of its leader, Pacha. Kuzco also finds his advisor Yzma handling duties that are his own, and he tells her she is finished. Yzma and her sidekick Kronk prepare a poisoned drink for him before word of her dismissal spreads, but Kronk takes the wrong vial from her laboratory, and Kuzco becomes a llama. Ordered to take the unconscious animal out of the city, Kronk loses the sack, and Pacha's cart carries Kuzco away from the palace.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Emperor's New Groove (2000)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The emperor's name was changed from Manco to Kuzco after producer Randy Fullmer discovered the Japanese slang term "manko", which translates to "cunt".
  • SPOILERSting wrote to Disney threatening to resign if the planned ending stayed: Kuzco destroying a rainforest to build his Kuzcotopia amusement park near Pacha's home. The ending was rewritten so Kuzco builds a shack and vacations among the villagers.
  • When the project was shelved in September 1998, Disney had already spent $25-30 million on it with only twenty-five percent of the film animated.
  • Sting's six songs for the original Kingdom of the Sun were dropped in the overhaul; he said "At first, I was angry and perturbed. Then I wanted some vengeance." Three deleted songs, including Yzma's villain song "Snuff Out the Light", were released as soundtrack bonus tracks.
  • Producer Randy Fullmer and director Mark Dindal halted production for six months to retool the film and renamed it Kingdom in the Sun, making it the first Disney animated feature to have an extensive overhaul since Pinocchio.
  • Yzma's sidekick Kronk was inspired by actor Rick Rossovich, and writer David Reynolds thought of Patrick Warburton for the voice because of his Seinfeld character Puddy.
  • In summer 1999 Owen Wilson, Harvey Fierstein and Trudie Styler were dropped from the cast, while Eartha Kitt and David Spade stayed on and John Goodman and Patrick Warburton joined.
  • The film built a cult following in several countries, particularly Italy, where the dub is considered an adaptation rather than a translation: it altered the action's tempo and the characterizations and entered Italian common parlance and meme culture.
