Plot summary
Elliot lives in New York City and works at a sandwich shop. The same week he meets Mia at a subway station, he learns he has Ewing sarcoma, a rare cancer of the bone that he at first mistakes for a venereal disease. Mia is a customer at the shop. He tells her about the diagnosis on their first date, and the two begin dating. Mia travels with him to New Jersey so he can tell his parents, then stays by his side as chemotherapy wears down his body and his mood. She gives up her marketing job to stay with him, while Elliot grows apart from his roommate and best friend, Nico.
