Plot summary
Curtis Pike's boss Marcus describes a company that is designing a new artificial intelligence, and Curtis meets the team behind it: Melody, Lightning and Sam. They introduce him to AIA, a digital family assistant, and suggest his household test it to enhance marketing. Melody puts AIA in the home so it can monitor the family. AIA studies Curtis, his wife Meredith and their children Iris, Cal and Preston, then organizes new routines and makes their daily life better. The team shows Curtis the large quantum computer that lets AIA learn faster.

- Afraid was first conceived as a techno-thriller in the vein of The Parallax View and only became a modern horror film during production. Writer/director Chris Weitz confirmed the film went through a "tortured" post-production process that changed it from his original vision, complicated by how far AI technology had advanced between writing and release.
- After a second weekend that fell 72.7%, Afraid was cut from 2,597 theaters down to 406 in its third weekend, the sixth-largest such drop in history.
