Plot summary
During the summer of 2006, before his final year of high school, Adam, a shy, nerdy, and awkward cisgender boy, travels to New York City to stay with his older sister. She is active in the local lesbian and trans activist community. At an LGBTQ+ party, Adam meets Gillian, a lesbian, and quickly develops a crush on her. Gillian assumes that Adam is a trans man, and Adam does not correct her, hoping that the lie will help him win her affection. As they begin to spend time together, Adam finds it increasingly difficult to tell her the truth about himself.

- Adam drew controversy because gender deception is a major plot element in both the film and Ariel Schrag's novel. Director Rhys Ernst, a trans man, acknowledged criticism of the book and said his condition for taking the job was telling the story from a trans perspective.
- Rhys Ernst also answered online calls to boycott Adam, saying that condemning projects before release is not progressive and that it reminded him of Gamergate and attempts to shut down a female Ghostbusters movie. He added that burning a book is "too close to fascism."
