Plot summary
Jude Feeney leaves his job in the Liverpool shipyards and sails to the United States to find the G.I. father he has never met, promising his girlfriend Molly that he will stay in touch. In Dayton, Ohio, cheerleader Prudence pines for another girl on her squad and drops out of school. Jude's father, Wes, is a janitor at Princeton, and the two do not bond. On campus Jude befriends Max Carrigan, who takes him home for Thanksgiving and introduces his sister Lucy; her boyfriend Daniel is headed for service in Vietnam, and she worries about him. Max drops out of college, and he and Jude move into a Greenwich Village enclave run by the singer Sadie, where Jude paints for hire and Max drives a cab.

- Concerned by the length of Julie Taymor's cut, Revolution Studios chairman Joe Roth tested a sneak preview of a shortened version without telling her, and Sony Pictures' Amy Pascal urged Taymor to agree to it, but after several months of dispute Taymor's version was released.
- The production budget was originally reported as $45 million, but documents from Joe Roth's sale of Revolution Studios revealed the actual cost of the film to be $70.8 million.
- Julie Taymor described screening the film for Paul McCartney: "At the end of the screening I did the classic thing. I asked him, 'Was there anything you didn't like?' He said, 'What's not to like?'"
- Besides the Beatles compositions, the film has an original score by Elliot Goldenthal, who had worked on Julie Taymor's previous films Titus and Frida; Goldenthal and Taymor have been romantic partners since 1982.
- In October 2020 Julie Taymor announced that a sequel was under way, with Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood in discussions about reprising their roles in a story set during the 1970s featuring more Beatles songs.
