Plot summary

For years Thomas Whitman, a former musician, has lived with multi-infarct dementia, and now he lies in a coma. His estranged daughter Gem weighs a do not resuscitate order while his mind returns to childhood, where he lives again as a ten-year-old orphan. At the orphanage he meets a girl named Ann and comes to hold a snow globe with a dancing figurine inside it, Arabesque. A snowman called Mr. White carries him on a flight through the sky, and while he chases his father's airplane he loses his balance and drops into a strange landscape marked by an abandoned roller coaster track that represents his mind and his memories. A mechanic there calls the work of repairing the track useless. In the waking world, Gem reaches her father's house and meets Ann.
