Plot summary
Hank Williams sings and writes country and blues music, and in the 1940s he rises to fame with his band, the Drifting Cowboys, whose players include bassist Lum York, lead guitarist Sammy Pruett and steel guitarist Don Helms. Audrey Williams, his wife, is his manager and his duet partner, and the mother of their son, Hank Williams Jr. Fred Rose, co-owner of the Acuff-Rose publishing house in Nashville, produces Williams' records and co-writes several songs with him. Williams' mother is Lillie Williams, and the gospel song I Saw the Light is one of the songs he wrote and performed. His drinking and his infidelity are a strain on the marriage and the career.

- Hank Williams III, the singer's grandson, publicly attacked Tom Hiddleston's singing on Facebook, posting a video of himself performing his grandfather's hit soon after Hiddleston sang "Move It on Over" at the 2014 Wheatland Music Festival.
