Cornel Wilde
Biography
Cornel Wilde was a Hungarian-American actor and filmmaker who began his acting career on Broadway in 1935 before moving into films. After small, uncredited parts, he signed with 20th Century Fox and became a leading man by the mid-1940s. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for A Song to Remember (1945) and starred in hits such as Leave Her to Heaven (1945), Road House (1948), and The Greatest Show on Earth (1952). In the 1950s he moved into writing, producing, and directing. His notable directorial works included The Naked Prey (1965), Beach Red (1967), and No Blade of Grass (1970). He also continued acting in films like The Big Combo (1955), Edge of Eternity (1959), and The Fifth Musketeer (1979), and he wrote songs during his career. He died in 1989.

Big break
Wilde was hired by Laurence Olivier as a fencing teacher for his 1940 Broadway Romeo and Juliet and was cast as Tybalt; the small run landed him a Warner Bros. film contract.
A role that slipped away
Wilde was supposed to play Joshua in de Mille's The Ten Commandments, but he turned the role down because he thought it was too small and the pay too little. John Derek played it instead.
Behind the camera
Wilde illustrated a 1936 fencing textbook called Fencing. Under the name Clark Wales, he also wrote a fencing play, Touché, in 1937.
Own stunts
Wilde won the National Novice Foils Championship at the New York Athletic Club in 1929 while fencing for the Columbia Lions.
