A Simple Twist of Fate (1994) on Netflix

Plot summary

Michael McCann divorces his wife after learning that his best friend fathered her child, then retreats to rural Virginia, where he makes finely crafted furniture and lives alone with a collection of gold coins. John Newland, a politician in the same town, has a younger brother, Tanny, who crashes a car in the woods near Michael's house and injures the woman with him. Fearing arrest for drunk driving, Tanny enters the sleeping house, takes the coins and disappears. Weeks later, during a winter storm, a toddler wanders into Michael's home, and her mother lies dead in the snow nearby. Michael adopts the girl, names her Mathilda, and the shopkeeper April Simon helps him raise her.
