Michael Des Barres
Biography
Michael Des Barres is an English actor and rock singer who grew up in Hove, Sussex. He started in music in Britain in 1972 with the glam rock band Silverhead, which released two albums on Purple Records before breaking up in 1974, then moved to Los Angeles and formed Detective, signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label, and later led Chequered Past. In 1985 he took Robert Palmer's place as vocalist in The Power Station and fronted the band at Live Aid. Acting came first, with a credited film debut in To Sir, with Love, and he went on to appear in Ghoulies (1984), Nightflyers (1987), Pink Cadillac (1989), Waxwork II: Lost in Time (1992), A Simple Twist of Fate (1994) and Catch That Kid (2004). On television he played Murdoc in MacGyver and Lenny Stoke in Lois & Clark, and he hosts a program on Little Steven's Underground Garage.

Big break
In 1985, Robert Palmer left The Power Station, a Duran Duran side project, right before the group's American summer tour. Des Barres was picked to take over as lead vocalist.
First role
Des Barres began acting at 8 as the Nux Bar kid on posters throughout England. His first credited film role came in the 1967 classic To Sir, with Love, as an East End pupil who wears dark sunglasses inside and outside.
Big break
After leaving Silverhead, Des Barres moved to Los Angeles and formed Detective, which Jimmy Page signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records after meeting Des Barres at a Silverhead show in Birmingham that Led Zeppelin attended.
Beyond film
On 23 October 2013, Des Barres took part in the world premiere of Frank Zappa's 200 Motels: The Suites with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, playing Rance, the narrator.
