Plot summary
Emily Dickinson grows up in Amherst, Massachusetts, in a Puritan household with her father Edward, her brother Austin and her sister Vinnie. At Mount Holyoke Female Seminary she stands up to the school mistress, Miss Mary Lyon, and her family takes her home. Her father and her aunt Elizabeth object to a woman singing anything but hymns at the opera, and Aunt Elizabeth judges Emily insolent. Emily asks her father to show her poems to his friend Dr Holland, who edits a Springfield newspaper; he prints one, calls the rest childish and says women cannot add much to literature.
