Plot summary
Rob Harlan gives years of sacrifice to his family, and the life that results leaves him miserable. When his father-in-law dies, the experience moves him enough that he writes a book drawn from it and decides to publish it. Readers do not come at first. Travel follows, to conferences and to meetings with curious readers and other authors, and the attention pulls his loved ones into the background. An elderly man he meets warns him that his own death is near and tells him he has only forty days left to live.
